The style is called a Jheri curl, named after hairstylist Jheri Redding, who developed the chemical process behind it. A relaxer first loosens the hair's natural texture, then a second solution sets it into soft, glossy curls — kept shiny and defined with a moisturizing "activator" spray. On Michael Jackson, the curl grew longer and looser through the Bad era, tossed dramatically during his performances and worn with a signature center part.
