Young Michael Jackson wore his hair natural — a classic, bushy afro — from the late 1960s, during his Jackson 5 years, until the mid-1970s, his natural curl pattern combed out into a full, rounded shape, the era-defining style of the time. In the early 1970s the Black Power Movement was in full swing, and wearing natural afro hair was itself a statement, at a time when many Black people felt ’obliged’ to wear their hair short to hide their natural curls.
